Background of the Study
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health condition that affects women following childbirth. It is characterized by persistent sadness, anxiety, fatigue, and difficulty bonding with the newborn, which can have long-term consequences for both the mother and child (American Psychiatric Association, 2024). While postpartum depression is widely recognized in developed countries, awareness and diagnosis remain low in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria.
In Kaduna State, maternal mental health issues are often overlooked, with many women experiencing depressive symptoms without seeking professional help. Cultural and social factors contribute to the silence surrounding postpartum depression, as many women fear being stigmatized or dismissed if they discuss their mental health struggles (Abubakar & Danjuma, 2024). Additionally, healthcare providers may lack adequate training to identify and address PPD, leaving many cases undiagnosed and untreated.
Raising awareness about postpartum depression is essential for improving maternal well-being and child development. This study assesses postpartum depression awareness among mothers in Kaduna State, examining knowledge levels, misconceptions, and attitudes toward seeking mental health support.
Statement of the Problem
Despite increasing global recognition of postpartum depression, awareness and diagnosis remain low in Kaduna State. Many mothers experience symptoms of depression but attribute them to general postpartum stress, hormonal changes, or spiritual issues. Additionally, societal expectations for new mothers to be strong and resilient often discourage women from seeking help (Okafor et al., 2024).
A lack of awareness and inadequate healthcare screening contribute to the underdiagnosis and undertreatment of PPD, increasing the risk of long-term psychological and developmental issues for both mother and child. This study seeks to assess postpartum depression awareness in Kaduna State, identifying gaps in knowledge and factors influencing attitudes toward mental health care.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of awareness and knowledge of postpartum depression among mothers in Kaduna State.
To examine factors influencing awareness and perception of postpartum depression.
To identify barriers to seeking help for postpartum depression.
Research Questions
What is the level of awareness of postpartum depression among mothers in Kaduna State?
What factors influence awareness and perception of postpartum depression?
What barriers prevent mothers from seeking help for postpartum depression?
Research Hypotheses
Higher levels of education are associated with greater awareness of postpartum depression.
Cultural stigma significantly reduces the likelihood of seeking help for postpartum depression.
Lack of postpartum depression screening in healthcare facilities leads to underdiagnosis.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on mothers who have given birth within the past two years in selected healthcare centers in Kaduna State. Limitations may include reluctance to disclose mental health issues due to stigma and potential underreporting of depressive symptoms.
